Starting 13 November 2024, the Australian Government’s Digital ID app, myGovID, will be officially renamed myID. The app will feature a new look and branding, aimed at minimising confusion with the myGov platform and enhancing user experience across government digital services.
What to expect during the transition
There’s no need for users to take any action to prepare for this change. Here’s what you’ll keep as myGovID becomes myID:
- Same login details – You’ll continue using your existing email, password, and identity strength settings without any need to set up or register for a new myID.
- Continued access to services – As myGovID transitions to myID, you can still securely access government services as usual. Simply update the app through the App Store or Google Play when available, or use your current app if it updates automatically.
- Dual branding – You might see both myID and myGovID logos during the transition, but this won’t impact your access or the security of your Digital ID.
Protect yourself against scams
As myGovID becomes myID, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has issued warnings about scams attempting to exploit this transition:
- Be cautious of fake websites, apps, and messages – Scammers are sending fraudulent emails, SMS, and even setting up fake websites that look like myGovID or myID to trick users into sharing personal information.
- Stay vigilant – The ATO will never ask you to confirm your details via a link or SMS. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from unknown sources. If you receive a message with a hyperlink prompting you to update or verify your myID, it’s a scam.
- Download from official sources only – The myID app should only be downloaded from trusted platforms like the App Store and Google Play.
- Use direct access – Access ATO services by typing “ato.gov.au” directly into your browser rather than clicking on links in messages.
The ATO is actively informing the public through its official channels, including their official social media, to help users avoid falling victim to fraud. Always be cautious, keep your personal information secure, and reach out to official sources if you have any concerns.
