UPDATE 01/12/2022: A 14 day grace period has been announced, directors must apply before 14 December 2022 to avoid penalties.
The director ID deadline for directors appointed before 31 October 2021 is coming up on 30 November 2022. Directors falling into this bracket must apply for their director ID before the deadline date or they may face significant penalties.
A director ID is a unique identification number that is allocated to directors, upon application, by the Australian Business Registry Service (ABRS).
If you’re a director of a company, registered Australian body, registered foreign company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation, you are required to have a director ID. All directors of NFP organisations and clubs registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will also need a director ID.
You can apply for your Director ID using your myGovID app to complete the application via the ABRS. Ensure you have the necessary documentation ready to verify your identity during the process. There is no fee in applying for a director ID. Use this link for more information on how to apply.
Once you are appointed your unique ID number, this number will permanently stay with you, even if you change employers. You will be able to update details online thereafter, but you won’t be required to apply for a new director ID.
When people must apply for their director ID depends on when they first become a director.
